Through the support of the North Carolina Legislature and the University of North Carolina system, 436 high school students from 75 counties completed an early-college residential experience by participating in the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics program this summer.
The program is administered by the state School of Science and Mathematics. It was conducted on the campuses of six universities June 19 - July 16 at East Carolina University, N.C. Central University, the Unive-rsity of North Carolina at Charlotte and Western Carolina University, and June 26 - July 23 at the UNC at Wilmington, and July 3 - July 30 at Appalachian State University.
Drawing from many sub-disciplines within biology, chemistry, earth sciences, pure and applied mathematics, oceanography and physics, the program provided participants unique opportunities to work with university faculty and master teachers in the investigation of a problem of the student's choice.
Area students participating in the program were: Crystal Hicks of North Duplin High School, Margaret Batts of James Kenan High, Jamie Cozart of James Kenan High, Shelley Sherman of Eastern Wayne High, Hameka Candady of Goldsboro High, Sarah Compton of Eastern Wayne High, Julie Ivey of North Duplin High, Michelle Joyner of Southern Wayne High, Sonia Kendrick of Eastern Wayne High, Bridget Parvin of Southern Wayne High, Danielle Pender of Wayne Christian School, Jonathan Pollock of Spring Creek High, Andres Regifo of Spring Creek High, Nida Waheed of Charles B. Aycock High and Andrew Ziccardi of Eastern Wayne High.
