College has Katrina project

Wayne Community College students and employees will have a car wash to benefit the American Red Cross' Katrina relief effort.
Student, faculty and staff volunteers will wash vehicles 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday at the maintenance building on the campus on Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro. Take the second entrance into the college from Wayne Memorial. A minimum $5 donation is suggested.
More than a dozen campus groups and numerous individuals from all areas of the college are volunteering and donating supplies for the event.
In conjunction with the carwash, groups are holding bake sales and have placed buckets around campus for monetary donations to "Change the Tide for Katrina's Victims."
WCC public information officer Tara Humphries said students, faculty and staff wanted to do something to help in the best way they can right now. They pulled the project together quickly, she said.
On Sept. 9 when they have collected the proceeds from all the elements of the project, a group will take it to the Wayne County Red Cross chapter house.
"The goal is to get funds to the Red Cross as soon as possible to aid its work to alleviate the terrible suffering south of us," Ms. Humphries said. "Later there will be more efforts to collect supplies, and we are investigating ways to assist our colleagues at affected community colleges down there. They'll be dealing with Katrina's wrath for a long time, and we'll keep doing what we can to help."
