MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 to discuss zoning land behind the Southern Belle Motel, which is now labeled agricultural residential, and changing its designation to heavy commercial district.

Mount Olive Mayor Ruff Huggins said a realtor requested the zoning change for a large shopping center. Wal-Mart hasn't said yes yet, he said, "but everybody knows what it is." The realtor has been invited to speak to the Planning Board.

Borden Howell Jr. has 17 acres, and Hugh Oates has 10 acres behind the Southern Belle, and they are asking the town for voluntary annexation of the same land. The Planning Board will also discuss the voluntary annexation request and is expected to vote on a recommendation to bring before the town board of commissioners. If the Planning Board signs off on the matter, town commissioners will then be expected to set a public hearing.

The Planning Board will also discuss setting goals and priorities for the town's future.

The board will also discuss setting dates for regular meetings.
