A free course for families and friends of people diagnosed with serious mental illness will start Sept. 14 for the Wayne, Lenoir, Duplin and Sampson counties. Participants will meet in the fellowship hall of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church at 2803 E. Ash St. The course will be held for 12 consecutive Wednesday evenings, from 6:30-9:30.

The course will cover information about schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and the family member's own self care.

The course will be taught by family member volunteers.

Registration is required by Sept. 9 and there are people already on the waiting list from last year's course so those interested are encouraged to call John Crowe at 759-2146 or 922-2142 or email drcrowe@nccumc.org as soon as possible.

The course is free and all materials are provided.
