Dr. Damon to lead new music program at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE - An accomplished musician has been hired by Mount Olive College to lead its new program in instrumental music this fall.
Dr. Sherri Marcia Damon, a trombonist, composer and band director, will be responsible for directing and teaching instrumental music courses, including private lessons, music education methods and ensembles.
The hiring was prompted by the college's decision to offer a major in instrumental music. Students who have played in band or orchestra in high school are also encouraged to participate and become more familiar with opportunities available in the school's music department.
"With this new program we look forward to providing students - both instrumental majors and other majors who love to perform - new and expanded opportunities to share their talents with the MOC community," Dr. Damon said.
"All of us in the music department are excited about the addition of this major to the curriculum. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my love of music with the students, staff and faculty of Mount Olive College."
Dr. Barbara Kornegay, vice-president for enrollment, said the addition of an instrumental music program is a dream come true for the college.
"Over the years more and more of our students have expressed interest in instrumental music, and nearly every high school in North Carolina has a band program," she said. "It is a natural fit for the college."
