Students receive awards

MOUNT OLIVE -- Several Mount Olive College students received awards during the Phi Beta Lambda national leadership conference held recently in Denver, Colo.
The conference is part of a competitive events program sponsored annually by the professional association for students pursuing business careers. Individuals, local chapters, and state teams compete in more than 40 events representing a range of business, career, and leadership development activities. The first- and second-place winners from state competitions represent their state chapter at the event.
Rebecca Whitley of Mount Olive placed fourth in the Future Business Teacher category and Kallen King of Faison was named N.C. PBL Business Person of the Year.
"It was a great honor to have our MOC PBL members compete at the National Leadership Conference," said Sonya McCoy, assistant professor of business and adviser for the MOC group. "We are so proud to continue this tradition of having our state winners advance to nationals and bring home awards. Not only do the students compete, but they also hear wonderful speakers, attend workshops, and participate in the election of national officers."
"Attending the National Leadership Conference for Phi Beta Lambda was an honor," Ms. Whitley said. "I was thrilled to compete on the national level against students from all over the United States and place fourth in Future Business Teacher.
"I appreciate all the students, advisers and professional division members who attended the conference and made it a huge success."
King said he was also honored to receive an award and be part of the local and state delegation.
"I plan to continue my support of PBL at the college, state and national level," he said.
Dr. Kathy T. Best, dean of the school of business at MOC, said the organization plays a vital role in the lives of business students.
"The organization stimulates them to grow professionally, socially, and academically," she said. "We are proud of Kallen and Rebecca and their accomplishments, as well as the hard work of their adviser, Sonya McCoy."
