Gateway vehicles will soon be sporting a new look -- one that officials with the public transportation system hope will help their bottom line.

Buses and vans will carry advertising signs that are could generate $10,000 to $15,000 a year, said Gateway Director Stephen Wright. The first sign -- advertising the JobLink employment site at Wayne Community College -- went up last week and more are expected to be placed on vehicles in the coming weeks.

Eventually, Wright said, all of the system's 27 buses and vans will carry signs. All the available advertising spots have already been sold, he said.

The local Honda dealership has bought 20 ads, Wright said.

Gateway runs fives buses in Goldsboro. The rest operate around Wayne County.

The system is funded through a combination of fees, state and federal grants and city and county allocations. The city is required to match state and federal funding dollar for dollar. The county pays $20 to match $80 in state and federal money.
