Pet care important during 4th

July 4 can be an exciting holiday for human beings, but a frightening and dangerous one for pets. To ensure your pet weathers the holiday well, Denise Whitmire of the Wayne County Humane Society offers these tips:
*Don't take dogs to fireworks displays. Most dogs are frightened by loud noises. "I have seen them break loose from someone holding them on a leash and run down the streets," she said. "They can get hit."
*Don't leave pets unattended at home in the yard where they might hear the fireworks. Taking them inside helps muffle the noise. Once they are inside, it is a good idea to turn on a television or radio that will help cover the noise.
*Don't leave pets in a vehicle. If you are traveling during the July 4 holiday and take your pets along, leaving them in the car can be fatal. Temperatures inside a closed-up car can rise to more than 100 degrees. Leaving the window down is not a good solution. Not only will the car remain hot, but the pet may escape or be stolen.
*Make sure your pet has a collar with identification on it in case it runs away or gets lost while on vacation.
