Child hit by car
Willie Ray Moore III, 8, of Heron Drive was listed this morning in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital after being hit by a car Monday afternoon.
The driver, Artisha Vernette Reid of Workman Street, was not charged. She told police she saw the boy while she was driving south on Salem Church Road. She said he was running across the road, and she tried to avoid hitting him by swerving to the right.
Another car was going north at the same time, and its driver, Andrew Parrish of Lanetree Drive, said he saw the child dart across the road tying to retrieve a ball. He said there was no way Ms. Reid could have seen Moore in time to keep from hitting him.
Her 2000 Toyota sustained $2,000 damage.
Investigations
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the following crimes:
*Two Guatamalan residents told investigators their Morgan Circle home in Dudley was burglarized only four hours after their arrival. Adelino and Santiago Herrera told deputies they were sleeping in the living room around 4 a.m. when two men entered and struck them with some type of handgun. They said the men entered through the unlocked front door and took $330. They described the men as black, wearing dark clothing and black masks.
*Someone reportedly pried open the rear door of Glen T. Shaw's home on Marlette Drive and took 15 Playstation 2 games, two controls, a keyboard, a headset, X-Box controls and station and seven X-Box games, all valued at $2,070.
*Aroy Williams of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive said a woman who lived with him stole his ATM card and withdrew $1,415.50 without his knowledge. He said he didn't know about it until he received his bank statement from BB&T. No arrest report was available.
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the following crimes:
*Somebody reportedly kicked in the back door at the home of James Grady Best on West Chestnut Street and took a 40-caliber handgun and two gold chains, all valued at $1,615.
*McDonalds at 300 N. Berkeley Blvd. reported finding a counterfeit $100 bill and a counterfeit $5 bill while counting the deposit Monday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
*The Waffle House at 2000 Wayne Memorial Drive reported receiving a counterfeit $50 used to purchase $15.57 worth of food. The report came in at 3:20 a.m., just five minutes after the alleged incident. The woman was last seen driving away in a Mitsubishi Eclipse and going south on Wayne Memorial Drive.
*Cathy Costley of South William Street said she was pumping gas Monday morning at 2101 William Drive when a black man in his early 20s walked up to her car, reached into her open window and took her purse. She said the purse and contents were valued at $400. The man was last seen running north toward Lockhaven Drive.
*Zerineia Carmichael, 25, of North Carolina Street, reported a break-in at the residence Sunday morning. Among items taken were a $300 money order, lamps, DVDs, a cordless phone, TV, and DVD player.
*At 8 a.m. Sunday, Ralph Faircloth, an employee of Worth Transportation Systems in Archdale, told police that a rock was found in the passenger seat of a company vehicle while parked on Corporate Drive. He reported the theft of $616 in cash from the glove box of the vehicle.
Accidents
Darlene Shields Williams of Park Circle and three passengers, Emporia Shields, Tyrion Shields and Kiara Williams, were treated an released at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a collision Monday afternoon on North William Street. A fourth passenger in the car and the other driver were unhurt.
The Goldsboro police report said Daniel Lynn Tripp of Wilson tried to turn left out of the Playground parking lot and pulled his 1990 Oldsmobile into the path of Ms. Williams' 2000 Buick as she was going south. He was charged with a safe movement violation and driving with no insurance. Damage was $2,500 to the Oldsmobile and $3,000 to the Buick.
Two people also were charged following accidents that occurred over the weekend.
*On Saturday at 12:10 p.m., Linda Sutton, 62, Alberton, was cited with failure to reduce speed after her car struck a parked vehicle partially in the roadway on the N.C. 111. According to reports, Ms. Sutton swerved to avoid the car but collided from behind, causing $13,000 damage to her own vehicle and 4500 to a car owned by Wesley Syulvanus Hall of Wallace.
*Melvin Rodney Hobbs, 40, Bear Creek Estates, LaGrange, said he fell asleep at the wheel while traveling north on RP 1728 on Sunday at 6:30 a.m., crossed the center lane and ran off the left side of the road, then lost control, re-entered the roadway and ran off the road on the right side and into a ditch. He was charged with reckless driving and his vehicle sustained $1,200 damage.
Unlicensed
on a motorcycle
Clifton Ray Strong of Boling Brooke Drive told Goldsboro police he thought he was changing from second gear to third when he lost control of the 2005 Honda Motorcycle he was riding Monday night on Slocumb Street approaching Wayne Avenue. The motorcycle, which sustained $7,000 damage, came to rest on the opposite side of the road. Strong was charged with driving without being licensed for a motorcycle and failure to report.
