Crime of the Week
A residential break-in in the 1500 block of Evergreen Avenue has been selected by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as this week's "Crime of the Week."
More than $8,000 worth of property was stolen between last Thursday and Sunday after thieves broke into the garage and then into the home. Computer and electronic equipment, jewelry and a large black suitcase with wheels were stolen.
The jewelry included a yellow gold ring with three opals in an antique setting, a yellow gold turquoise watchband, a white gold turquoise watchband, a white gold anklet with red stones, a yellow and white gold dragonfly pendant and a black leather band with rhinestone letters spelling a woman's name.
Nearby residents reported seeing a tall, thin black man in his 30s riding an old bicycle and pulling a large black suitcase with wheels at about the time of the break-in.
Anyone with information on this break-in or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they might be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Man robbed
A man from Bladenboro said he was assaulted and robbed before dawn today of $200 by black men in the 500 block of Walnut Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Cornelius K. Benjamin, 39, told police that the suspects punched and kicked him and took his cash at about 1:39 a.m. When the assault stopped, he fled and flagged down a police officer. He could not describe the suspects further.
Vehicle thefts
Two teen-agers have been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony vehicle thefts.
Sterling Chavez Trejo, 17, of Crabapple Lane was charged Wednesday with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen property, a Suzuki dirt bike. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Trejo is charged in connection with the theft of the bike June 3 from McArthur Pond Road, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said. The bike, valued at $3,000, was recovered the next day and returned to its owner.
Todd Christopher Brogden, 19, of Butler Road, Dudley, and Trejo were charged Tuesday with larceny and possession of stolen property, a four-wheeler. Each was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
The four-wheeler, valued at $3,500, was recovered and returned to its owner, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Deputy Keith Hartzog assisted on the case.
3 hurt in 5 wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $22,000 in five recent traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A man operating a moped tried to avoid a vehicle in front of him at 10:43 a.m. Wednesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Ridgecrest Drive, lost control of his bike and fell off, police said. Ernest Wilson, 72, of Eagles Nest Road, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges were filed. Damage was set at $800 to the moped. The other vehicle was not struck.
*A driver was injured in a two-car collision at 4:41 p.m. Wednesday on West Ash Street at the new U.S. 117 bypass, police said. Frances Diane Ward, 59, of O'Berry Center Road, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Lamont D. Thomas, 33, of North Leslie Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end collision. Damages were put at $200.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and East Ash Street, police said. One driver, Philip Ryan Grubb, 20, of Lane Tree Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Natasha Shanell Mathews, 30, of Mint Hill Drive, LaGrange.
*Damages were set at $5,000 in a two-car wreck at 5:21 p.m. Wednesday at Patetown Road and Oakwood Street, police said. One driver, Juanita Celeste Davis, 48, of Oakwood Street, was charged with an improper turn. The report said Ms. Davis was making a left turn and her car collided with an oncoming, southbound auto driven by Milicent D. Hardison, 50, of U.S. 70 West.
*A driver was injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 4:09 p.m. Monday on Dixie Trail near South John Street, police said. George Goodman Uzzell, 55, of Berry Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The report said a car driven by Jai Kieunna Kornegay, 26, of Breazeale Avenue, Mount Olive, ran off the right side, then he overcorrected the steering and the car collided with Uzzell's oncoming, westbound van and rolled over into the left ditch. The vehicles were valued at $11,000.
Counterfeit money
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Three counterfeit $100 bills were used between Tuesday and dawn today to buy food at the drive-through windows at three fast-food restaurants, police said. Employees at Taco Bell and the Wendy's restaurant on Berkeley Boulevard said the suspects were black women. The McDonald's restaurant on Berkeley Boulevard also was victimized, reports said.
*A laptop computer was stolen Wednesday after it was delivered to a door of a home in the 800 block of Randolph Street, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Michael Cannon, said the laptop was worth $1,467.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, a shotgun, a cell phone, 15 DVD movies and about $200 in change were stolen between Wednesday and dawn today after a window was damaged at a home in the 100 block of High Meadow Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, David Raymond Whitehead, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,175, in addition to the money. Damage was set at $10.
*Two cameras and two gold rings were stolen Wednesday after a window was shattered in a mobile home in the 100 block of Emmanuel Place near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, C.A. Ledbury, estimated the stolen property's value at $630 and damage at $300.
*A door glass and a plate-glass window were smashed between Tuesday and Wednesday at Taylor's C-Mart at 110 W. Main St. in Eureka, deputies said. Damage was estimated at $1,000.
