Results for local contestants in state Special Olympics given

Special Olympics Wayne County athletes participated in the state games in Raleigh recently, competing in aquatics as well as track and field events.

Aquatics team members and their honors included:

*Jenifer Cruz -- bronze 25m backstroke, gold 50 m backstroke, and competition ribbon for 25m freestyle

*Ra'heem Humphrey -- silver 25m backstroke, bronze 25m freestyle, bronze 50m freestyle

*Alan Jenkins -- gold 25m freestyle, silver 50m freestyle

*Leah Jones -- silver 25m freestyle, bronze 50m freestyle

*Jesse Martinez -- gold 25m butterfly, silver 50m backstroke, silver 50m freestyle

*Heather Pardue -- silver 15m walk, silver 15m unassisted swim, fourth place ribbon flotation

*Melissa Stanford -- silver 25m freestyle, bronze 50m freestyle

*Erica Walderman -- gold 25m butterfly, bronze 50m backstroke, bronze 50m freestyle

In addition, the Wayne Warriors 4x25 relay team, Humphrey, Jenkins, Martinez and Walderman, placed fifth in that event.

The aquatics athletes were coached by Debi Walderman and Don Jenkins.

The track and field team, coached by Jim and Kris Brewer and assisted by Dorothy Moore, earned the following awards:

*Robert Benson -- silver shotput, fifth place 100m dash, fourth place 200m dash

*Scott Britt -- gold 50m walk, bronze standing long jump, bronze softball throw

*Anthony Darden -- silver 200m dash, silver shotput, bronze 200m dash

*Jonathan Delano -- silver running long jump, silver shotput, fourth place 100m dash

*Tammy Drake -- bronze softball throw, fourth place 50m walk

*Shannon Moore -- gold shotput, gold 100m race/walk, gold 400m race/walk

*Miguel Sheffield -- bronze shotput, bronze 100m dash, bronze 200m dash.
