Paramount meeting

is set for Thursday

A community meeting Thursday will try to capture what citizens want in the new Paramount Theater.

Architects from Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee want to talk with representatives of local artistic, musical and community groups. The firm is trying to determine their needs and hopes for the stage, wing and backstage areas.

But they are also interested in hearing from city residents about how the theater should look, how it could be used and what they would want as audience members.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday in the City Council's chambers, second floor of Goldsboro City Hall, 214 N. Center St.

The architects will be working with the Paramount Theater Committee this summer to determine the scope of the project. Design work could begin by September.

The Paramount was destroyed by a fire in February.

Water rate hike

Wayne Water Districts plan to raise water rates next month for some residential customers who use excessive amounts of water.

The increase will affect homeowners who use more than 10,000 gallons of water in a month, which is about twice the normal household usage. The new rate will not apply to commercial or agricultural customers.

Eddie Coltrane, the districts' manager, said the rate change will only apply to the 10,001 gallon and above. For example, if a household uses 11,000 gallons in July, it will cost about $2.35 more than it would this month.

The districts are trying to encourage homeowners to conserve water voluntarily and to minimize excessive use such as irrigation. People with extensive landscaping or other water needs may want to dig shallow wells, he said.

Wayne Water Districts are among local water systems required by the N.C. Coastal Plain Capacity Use Area Rules to reduce their use of deep wells by 75 percent by 2018.

Bloodmobile

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a blood drive on Monday from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at the Seven Springs Rescue Squad. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash, a Texas Steakhouse coupon, an American Red Cross wristband and a free Red Cross T-Shirt.
