Probation officer
gets suspended sentence
A former state brobation officer has pleaded guilty to changing a record and sentenced to unsupervised probation.
Sherrie Overton Powell, 41, of U.S. 13 South had been charged with seven felony counts of altering court documents, six felony counts of common-law obstruction of justice and one misdemeanor count of obstruction of justice.
Ms. Powell pleaded guilty in Wayne County Superior Court to the misdemeanor that she had changed an order of probation to remit supervisory fees for one month. She was sentenced by Judge Gary Trawick of Burgaw to 45 days in jail, but the term was suspended on condition that she serve 12 months of unsupervised probation and pay $201 in court costs.
Ms. Powell had been accused of changing orders that terminate probation to say remit all moneys. The case was investigated by Special Agent Barbara Lewis of the State Bureau of Investigation. Ms. Powell was defended by lawyer Geoff Hulse of Goldsboro.
Fraud cases
Two Wayne County women say they were victims of flim-flam artists, Goldsboro police reported.
Samatha Sykes of Mount Olive told police that a man, known only as Raymond, asked her to write a check for $3,000 to buy a computer and send it to Ecuador. He said he would send a return check and she could keep any money left over, the report said.
Ms. Sykes said she got a check for $7,500 but when she went to a bank to deposit it, she was told that the check was counterfeit.
Lashonda M. Atkinson of Goldsboro reported that she got an e-mail from an unknown man who asked her to fly to Florida to perform in a show with all expenses paid. She received checks in the mail for $4,200 and $4,030.65.
When Ms. Atkinson went to the bank, she said she found out that they were written on non-existing accounts, the report said.
Man robbed
A Goldsboro man said he was robbed before dawn today by two armed men of his wallet that had $47 and personal papers, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Roberto Garcia told officers that two young black men approached him and then displayed handguns at about 1:35 a.m. at his home in Tanglewood Mobile Home Park on Central Heights Road. They grabbed his property and fled toward the road.
One suspect wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans, and the other wore a white T-shirt. No arrests have been made.
Sex charge
A 29-year-old man from Mount Olive was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
Wayne Doral Kornegay of South Johnson Street was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond. Kornegay did not notify the Sheriff's Office within 10 days that he had moved from his previous address, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A red Polaris four-wheeler was stolen between Sunday and Tuesday from a shelter in the 1300 block of Buck Swamp Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Charles Alan Lancaster of Pikeville, said the four-wheeler was worth $6,500.
*A combination DVD player and video cassette recorder and an 18-speed bicycle were stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1500 block of East Mulberry Street, Goldsboro police said. The resident, William Richard Helms, put a $170 value on the stolen property.
House fire
An alert homeowner used a garden hose Monday to put out a bedroom fire in his house at 311 Lakewood Ave. near Dudley, fire officials said Tuesday.
"It could have been real (bad)," Dudley Fire Chief Kendall Lee said. "...The homeowner got a water hose and put it out. He did a good job and kept us from having a lot of work to do."
The homeowner's name was not immediately available.
Lee said an electrical outlet in the bedroom had shorted out and caught the bed and other furniture on fire.
Damage was estimated at $2,000. The home was valued at $60,000, and contents were valued at $15,000, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Whitman said.
About 17 Dudley volunteers responded with three trucks. Mar Mac assisted with three units.
Collision
A car was demolished in a wreck at 8:45 a.m. Friday on N.C. 111 near Park Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Carlos Ahuelican-Nava, 22, of Shade Tree Lane, Seven Springs, was charged with exceeding a safe speed and no operator's license.
The report said the car ran off the right side, struck a bank and overturned. The car was valued at $4,000. Ahuelican-Nava had minor injuries but declined treatment at the scene.
