FREMONT -- The Fremont town board made one change in its proposed 2005-06 budget this week during a special workshop at Town Hall.

But the aldermen also discussed how to help downtown businesses and the removal of junked vehicles.

Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie said the board agreed to shift $5,000 from ditch maintenance to downtown development. The board wants to buy decorative banners with the money.

A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held during the board's monthly meeting June 21. The new budget calls for no increase in the 65-cent property tax rate.

The board will provide information during the June 21 meeting on the purchase of a new truck for the Fremont Volunteer Fire Department. McDuffie said the Department of Agriculture will finance the $291,000 cost of the truck.

McDuffie said the board set a deadline of Wednesday for the removal of junked vehicles. If the vehicles have not been removed, then he said they will be towed by a private contractor.

Local business owners will be invited to meet at 7:45 p.m. June 28 with Bob Murphrey of the Division Community Assistance in the state Department of Commerce.
