Grand jury returns indictments for robberies, assault

A 30-year-old Mount Olive man has been indicted by the Wayne County Grand Jury on 18 charges in connection with numerous robberies of elderly women and residential break-ins.
James Lenair Albrittain of Oliver Street was charged by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Goldsboro, Mount Olive and Fremont police and the state Highway Patrol with the offenses in February.
Albrittain was arrested Feb. 17 after a chase across Goldsboro. Police charged him with two counts of armed robbery and common-law robbery and one count of first-degree burglary. He was accused of robbing women on Gloucester Road, Langston Drive and South John Street on Feb. 2. Several victims were in their 80s.
The grand jury handed up an indictment on another charge of common-law robbery in Fremont. Albrittain was accused of assaulting and robbing an 87-year-old woman from Eureka Feb. 4 as she entered the town library.
Sheriff's detectives charged Albrittain with two counts of breaking and entering and one count each of common-law robbery, second-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering of a vehicle, larceny and possession of stolen goods. One victim was an 80-year-old woman who was robbed of $22 Feb. 16 in Rosewood.
Albrittain was indicted on charges of armed robbery, breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods in Mount Olive.
The Highway Patrol charged him with fleeing to elude arrest.
Attempted murder
A Goldsboro man was indicted on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury and first-degree burglary.
Cedric Levern Smalls, 21, of West Chestnut Street was accused of shooting Rashid Tarif Adham Taymullah of North George Street early Jan. 1 in an apartment in the 100 block of Vanderbilt Circle. Taymullah was treated for his injuries and later released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Smalls was arrested March 10 by Wayne County sheriff's deputies during a traffic stop.
False pretense
A woman accused of stealing toys from a collection box before Christmas has been indicted on two charges of obtaining property by false pretense.
Kimberly Dawn Crawford Riveros, 22, of Dunn was accused of fraudulently obtaining permission from businesses to charge items at the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Goldsboro. Wayne County sheriff's detectives said she took forged letters to the store and obtained a utility trailer and a lawn tractor.
Ms. Riveros had been charged with misdemeanor larceny by Goldsboro police for the theft of $702 worth of toys from a Toys for Tots box. She has not been tried on the charge.
The grand jurors also handed up 97 true bills of indictment during their monthly meeting, including 21 for drug charges.
Nineteen people were indicted on such property charges as burglary, breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Fifteen were indicted on fraud charges, including forgery, uttering, false pretense and embezzlement.
The grand jury returned seven true bills for assault, six each for robbery and traffic violations, five for firearms offenses and three for sex charges.
Eight people were indicted as habitual felons. If any defendant is convicted of a fourth, non-overlapping offense, then his sentence would be lengthened significantly.
Several people were indicted for offenses in more than one crime category.
