WARSAW -- A small group of advocates for abused and neglected children gathered at Veterans Park in Warsaw on Wednesday to observe Stand for Children Day.

Clarette Sutton of the Emotions organization, which sponsored the event, said many children in Duplin and surrounding counties need help to avoid falling into lives shadowed by teenage pregnancy, drugs and crime.

Emotions has helped sponsor summer camps for children in Duplin and Wayne counties. Ms. Sutton said the organization has about 15 volunteers who hold summer camps for children in Warsaw, Mount Olive and Goldsboro. The camps run from June 6 to Aug. 12 at Marvin's Barbecue on Wards Bridge Road, the Henrietta Williams Center in Mount Olive and a church on South James Street in Goldsboro.

Ms. Sutton's interest in child advocacy stems from her past. While in college, she was shot by teenagers seeking to join a gang. Since then she has worked to help young people find ways to avoid the path that leads to trouble.
