cause of fatal crash
A 21-year-old airman who was killed early Sunday in a one-car wreck on U.S. 13 was traveling north at a high rate of speed, state Highway Patrol Trooper J.L. Graham wrote in his report that was released today.
Joshua O. Misselt, who had a Happy Valley Drive address, lost control of his car in a curve, and it ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch and a driveway culvert at Christian Care Academy at 3353 U.S. 13 South and overturned, Graham said. The trooper estimated Misselt's speed at 75 mph based on evidence at the scene.
Misselt was pinned inside the 1996 Acura. His passenger, Ashley Adams, 19, of Daughtry Field Road, Mount Olive, was ejected from the car, Graham's report said. Her mother said Ms. Adams had crawled from wreckage. Ms. Adams was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said, and is recovering at home.
Misselt's car, valued at $6,000, was destroyed.
Fire calls
The Goldsboro Fire Department responded to two fire calls Wednesday that resulted in $250 in damages, officials said.
Unattended cooking was blamed for a fire that filled an apartment at 327 N. Alabama Ave. with smoke. The fire was out by the time 10 firefighters arrived within minutes of the 1:38 p.m. alarm with two engines, a ladder truck and a command car.
The only damage reported at Cardell Parks' home was $50 to a door that firefighters smashed in to get inside. They stayed 30 minutes to blow out the smoke.
In the second fire, officials speculated that someone had dropped a lighted cigarette in paper towels in a closet at the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment center at Cherry Hospital on West Ash Street.
Damage was confined to about $200 in the closet, fire officials said. Fourteen firefighters answered the 10:57 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car and needed 30 minutes to put out the fire and investigate the cause of it.
Drug charges
A 41-year-old man has been arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with two felony drug offenses and a firearms violation.
Dallas Billington Kirby of U.S. 70 East was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Kirby also was charged by sheriff's detectives with felony possession of stolen property. He was accused of stealing property Saturday from Tammie Driggers' home on U.S. 70 East, where he had lived. Kirby was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $105,000 secured bond.
5 hurt in 4 crashes
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $19,150 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A passenger from Elizabethtown was injured in a two-car collision at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and a ramp to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, Goldsboro police said. Emma W. Harvey, 36, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Michael Wayne Hudson, 20, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said Hudson had started a left turn and the car collided with an oncoming, southbound auto. The other driver was Teresa Munoz Gomez, 28, of Herman Lane, Snow Hill. Damages were set at $3,300.
*Both drivers were injured in a two-car crash at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Langston Drive, police said. Joan Dolores Barnes, 39, of Hare Road and Lindsay Marie McNally, 17, of Bryant Street, Fremont, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Barnes was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $4,000.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-car wreck at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday on Stevens Mill Road near N.C. 581, police said. Veronica H. Graham, 49, of Alpha Court was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Candice Faye Lanier, 20, of Friendship Church Road, Faison, was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end wreck. Damages were fixed at $1,250.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $10,600 in a two-car collision at 6:14 p.m. Tuesday at N.C. 111 and Daw Pate Road, the Highway Patrol said. Suzanne Pagitt, 44, of Falcon Drive, Pikeville, was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Pagitt, who was going west, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The other driver, Kay B. Sasser, 41, of N.C. 111 North, Pikeville, was traveling south.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $1,772 worth of property was stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Swingle Tree Circle near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, Demetrius M. Kornegay, reported the theft of a car radio, a gold chain, video-game equipment, two DVD players, a radio, sports jerseys, athletic shoes, a suitcase and $65.
*An estimated $955 worth of property was stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1600 block of Old Grantham Road, deputies said. The resident, John David Cormier, said a stereo, a television, a DVD player, a video cassette recorder, pictures, food, a lamp, end tables, a mirror and bath towels were stolen. A yellow Labrador dog, valued at $175, also was taken from outside, reports said.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A digital camera, two other cameras and a camera case were stolen between May 22 and Wednesday from an unlocked car in the 600 block of Todd Drive, police said. The resident and owner, Mary C. Bradley, put a $1,428 value on her property.
*A beige, four-door 1998 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen between Friday and Wednesday from Adamsville Auto Sales at 109 S. Berkeley Blvd., police said. The car was valued at $4,000.
False report
A 26-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a false report of a vehicle theft.
Tracy Jackson of Angela Drive was accused of making the report May 9. But Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said the vehicle had been repossessed before the report was filed. Ms. Jackson's bond was set at $6,000.
Missing child
An 11-year-old boy was reported missing Wednesday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Michael Antonio Thompson of 304 W. Ash St. was described as black, 4-feet-9 and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. When he was seen last at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Fairview Circle, he was wearing an orange shirt, black pants and white shoes. Anyone with information on his location is asked to call police at 705-6572.
