Rotary Memorial Garden

A splash of colors and a canopy of green will define the two memorials at Wayne Community College in a couple years.
They are baby trees and bushes now.
Goldsboro Rotarians have built a memorial garden and dedicated it Tuesday afternoon.
The garden is located on the north end of the Wayne Community College campus between the memorials to fire, law enforcement and rescue people who have lost their lives and to fallen members of the five branches of military service. The garden borders the memorials and fills in the middle ground. Oaks stand at the corners, and the garden features a variety of plantings such as crepe myrtles and azaleas, river birch, cherry trees and red maples.
Goldsboro Rotary President John Peacock said the club wanted to provide a border and definition to the memorials. The military memorial was placed on the campus in the mid-1980s. The other memorial has been there about two years.
"We saw this open space. It was just a field," Peacock said. "We wanted to create a true memorial garden as opposed to just two memorials."
He said every Rotary Club in the world is developing a centennial project to celebrate Rotary's 100th anniversary. This is the Goldsboro club's project.
He said the club plans to place a monument in one of the clusters of bushes in the middle and designate it as the Rotary Centennial Garden.
The garden was designed and planted by Landscape Design.
The Goldsboro Rotary Club will maintain it.
Peacock said next year the club may put in some more plants.
