Army National Guard Capt. David A.S. Moore is a member of the 48th Brigade Combat Team who recently participated in a desert warfare training test at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. The Georgia National Guard soldier is a member of the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment based in Calhoun, with units in Canton and Dalton.
Moore graduated in 1989 from Eastern Wayne High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 1994 from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
Jessica L. Hietpas has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
She is a 2001 graduate of Rosewood High School and received a bachelor's degree in 2005 from North Carolina State University.
Army Pfc. Lavonya C. Campbell has arrived for duty at the 101st Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Ky.
Campbell, a petroleum supply specialist with one year of military service, is the daughter of Joyce N. Campbell of Dudley and a 2002 graduate of Southern Wayne High School.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Christian J. Castro has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, he studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Rubenia Figueroa of Faison and is a 2002 graduate of James Kenan High School.
Navy Seaman Recruit Dawntrell E. Rasberry, son of Veronica J. and stepson of Jeffrey C. Best of La Grange, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, he completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
He is a 2004 graduate of Greene Central High School in Snow Hill.
Nicholad B. Tucker has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. The enlistment makes the new soldier eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty prior to being assigned to their first permanent duty station.
Tucker, a 1998 graduate of South Lenior High School in Deep Run, is the son of Wanda Mitchell of Raleigh and Emmett N. Tucker of Seven Springs.
Charles R. Covar has joined the United States Army Reserve under the Delayed Training Program.
The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay reporting for basic military training for up to 270 days. An enlistment in the reserve makes new soldiers eligible to receive more than $7,000 toward a college education, $20,000 for repayment of college loans, and a maximum $5,000 cash bonus.
Covar, a 2005 graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School, is the son of Charles R. and Shelia Covar of Pikeville.
