Hungry thief
hits Wilber's
A thief entered Wilber's Barbecue Northside at 1104 N. William St. between Friday and Monday and stole two cans of Brunswick stew, a bag of onion rings and a can of green beans, Goldsboro police reported.
The thief had inflicted an estimated $500 in damages to an air conditioner on the roof to get inside and steal about $8 worth of food, the report said.
Meanwhile, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a side-by-side refrigerator from a vacant home in the 2100 block of Carolina Circle. The thief had damaged a door between May 1 and Monday. The refrigerator was valued at $700. Damage was set at $100.
Robbery
A 23-year-old Goldsboro woman was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony armed robbery.
Ashley Renee Biggs of Hickory Road was accused of robbing a woman at knifepoint May 3 on a dirt path in Foxfire Estates off Genoa Road, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said. Ms. Biggs was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
The victim had reported the theft of $550 and other property, including a pocketbook, a purse, medicine and personal papers.
Arrest in break-ins
A 29-year-old Zebulon man was arrested Monday in connection with break-ins at three homes on Woodside Circle, Wayne County Sheriff's Office officials reported.
Jose Guadalupe Torres-Ponce was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Torres-Ponce was accused of stealing clothes, jewelry, cigarettes and cash, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. Other charges will be sought through grand jury indictments.
Insurance fraud case
A man and wife have been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony insurance fraud in the unlawful burning of a building at 140 Dog Pond Road near Seven Springs.
Johnny Harrison Smith Jr., 52, of Dog Pond Road, Seven Springs, was charged with burning an unoccupied building and insurance fraud. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
Colette Smith, 37, was charged with insurance fraud. She was released from custody on a $35,000 unsecured bond.
The building was owned by the Smiths, who lived nearby. Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris and Detective Mike Reid investigated the March 2 burning with assistance from the Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the Wayne County Fire Marshal's Office.
Office break-in
PRINCETON -- Thieves smashed a window at the Nationwide Insurance office Saturday and stole about $2,550 worth of property, Princeton Police Chief Eddie Lewis said Monday.
Computers, a fax machine, stamps and cash were stolen from Susan Stanley's office at 107 E. Railroad St. Damage was estimated at $550.
Nearby residents told police that they heard something at about 1:30 a.m. but did not call police. Ms. Stanley also has an office in Goldsboro.
Building burns
An abandoned storage building was destroyed Saturday in a fire in the 3000 block of N.C. 581 North, officials said Monday.
Nahunta Volunteer Fire Chief Jay Howell said the property was being cleared and the work crew set debris on fire and then left. He said wind blew the fire into pine straw and then the blaze spread to the building. The owner of the building was not immediately identified. Polly Watson volunteers assisted Nahunta.
9 hurt in 10 accidents
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $68,400 in 10 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car, rear-end collision at 2:46 p.m. Monday on Wayne Memorial Drive near 11th Street, Goldsboro police said. Amanda Paige Hartley, 25, of Beech Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Margaret P. Culbreth, 87, of Crisp Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $3,500.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Grantham School and Waller roads, the Highway Patrol said. Margaret B. Parker, 69, of Flowers Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency room treatment. The other driver, Sandra T. Gonzalez, 31, of Fox Drive, Dudley, was charged with yield violation at a stop sign. Her eastbound sport utility vehicle collided with Ms. Parker's northbound car, the report said.
*A driver was injured and her sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 7:34 a.m. Saturday on Genoa Road near Pecan Road, the Highway Patrol said. Mirna Velasquez, 30, of Timothy Street, Dudley, was released after emergency room treatment. She was charged with driving left of center after the SUV ran off the left side into a field and overturned several times. The SUV was valued at $5,000.
*Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 9:09 a.m. Saturday at Miller's Chapel and Thoroughfare roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Mary H. Williams, 41, of Colonial Drive, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her passenger, Adam Motter, 20, of Mooresville, was released after emergency room treatment. The other motorist, Harvey Lee Hare, 75, of North Daisy Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were set at $4,000.
*A driver from Selma was charged with exceeding a safe speed at 7:09 a.m. Friday after his car hydroplaned on a wet U.S. 117 near O'Berry Road, then ran into the median and struck the cable guardrail, the Highway Patrol said. Keith Adam VanHousen, 31, was not injured. Damages were put at $5,900.
*A driver was injured in wreck at 8:29 a.m. Friday on U.S. 117 near Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. Brittany Elizabeth Zamora, 19, of Allison Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car hydroplaned on the wet road, ran into the median and struck the cable guardrail. Damages were fixed at $1,900.
*A northbound driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,600 in a three-car collision at 3:45 p.m. Friday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Fannie S. Joyner, 52, of Decoy Drive, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. A driver leaving a convenience store, Joseph Harold Worrells, 79, of Wayne Memorial Drive, was charged with a yield violation. The report said a southbound motorist, Michelle Denise Cape, 16, of Tommy's Road, tried to avoid Worrell's car that had turned south but lost control of the car that she was driving, and it crossed the center line and sideswiped Worrell's car and Ms. Joyner's oncoming, northbound auto. Ms. Cape was charged with an equipment violation, unsafe tires.
*Both southbound drivers were injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 3:40 p.m. Friday at N.C. 111 and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Sandra Faye Smith, 55, of Airport Road, Pikeville, and Danny Ray Rivers, 22, of Eagle Ridge Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Rivers was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The vehicles were valued at $8,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a car-truck crash at 3:10 p.m. Thursday on Indian Springs Road near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Victor Herrera Chavez, 17, of Greenfield Cemetery Road, Seven Springs, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was listed as Ryan Allan VanDyke, 17, of Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley.
*A northbound driver was injured and damages were estimated at $21,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. David Edward Webb, 54, of Upper Black Creek Church Road, Lucama, was released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound motorist, Peggy G. Aprahamian, 63, of Rainier, Wash., was charged with a stop-sign violation.
Firearm charges
A 28-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony firearms offenses.
Mitchell Allen Daniels of Wayne Memorial Drive was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
Daniels was accused of stealing a shotgun in January, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. The weapon was recovered after Farfour and the Sheriff's Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team searched Daniels' home.
Parole considered
The N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission is investigating the possible parole of a man convicted in 1981 for armed robbery. Henry Battle was sentenced in Wayne County Superior Court to 20 years to life in prison.

The state's current structured sentencing law eliminates parole for offenses committed after Oct. 1, 1994. The commission is responsible for paroling offenders sentenced under previous guidelines.
