Wayne named School District of the Year

Wayne County Public Schools has been named School District of the Year for Eastern North Carolina, in recognition of its international education and cultural exchange.
The award is from the Visiting International Faculty Program, based in Chapel Hill, the nation's largest cultural exchange program for teachers and schools. North Carolina leads the nation with 1,000 international teachers through VIF.
In Wayne County, 17 teachers have been hired from the international program.
Dr. Steven D. Taylor, superintendent of schools, and Hope Meyerhoeffer, director of the English-as-a-Second Language program, were recognized for demonstrating leadership in supporting international education through the public school system.
"We appreciate the strong commitment the district has made to cultural education," said Ned Glascock, a spokesman for the Visiting International Faculty Program. "The district's support has allowed our international teachers to enhance the global perspective and cultural understanding of hundreds of students in this region.
"The principals hosting VIF teachers have been exemplary in treating VIF teachers as welcome 'guests' in the United States."
The award were presented at the annual VIF awards celebration held last week in Greensboro.
