Driver captured
following chase
A 34-year-old man was arrested before dawn today after he allegedly rammed a deputy's car and was chased by Goldsboro police and Wayne County Sheriff's officers.
Mark A. Simpson of Holland Hill Drive evaded a Goldsboro police license checkpoint at about 2:15 a.m. and sped into the county, according to reports filed by both departments. The police then asked the Sheriff's Office to take over the pursuit.
Simpson drove down Rosewood Road to Charlie Braswell Road, then turned right on Ebenezer Church Road and turned right again on U.S. 70, officers said.
Sheriff's deputies Rodney Lovic and Aaron Cantwell pursued the suspect's van.
When Lovic got alongside the van, Simpson turned his vehicle into the deputy's patrol car. The suspect lost control of the van, and it spun out and stopped on the side of the highway, the report said.
Simpson was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon and injury to government property. The patrol car sustained about $500 in damages.
Simpson also was charged by police with felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving while his license was revoked, reckless driving, fictitious registration and an open container violation.
He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $10,000.
Bogus checks
Counterfeit Case Farms checks have showed up at at least one Goldsboro bank, but bank officials refused to cash the checks and the suspects left, authorities said.
Several people with fake Case Farm identifications got in line with regular employees last week at the Dudley business and cashed 92 bogus checks with a mobile check cashing business from Tarboro.
Wayne County sheriff's detectives said a person used the name Saul Estrada to cash four checks, another used the name Victor Avila and a woman cashed three checks.
Detectives said 45 names appeared on the checks.
Authorities believe the scammers may be part of a much bigger nationwide group of con artists.
Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher urged banks and businesses to be cautious when cashing Case Farms checks.
Anyone with information on the bogus checks or the suspects is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Accidents
A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run accident at 3:29 p.m. Thursday at East Ash and Barrow streets, Goldsboro police said. Michelle Hope Dimmett, 35, of Ream Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. A driver in the center lane turned right, then collided with Ms. Dimmett's van, the report said, and drove off. Damage was set at $2,500.
Car stolen
A man warmed up his car before dawn today, went inside and then saw his car was being driven away on South Slocumb Street, a Goldsboro police report said. Andre D. McCalop of Courtyard Circle said his gold, four-door 1999 Mercury Mystique was worth $4,000. He could not describe the thief.
Embezzlement
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office on Thursday have arrested a suspect in a felony embezzlement case. Shannon Marie Wise, 23, of Edray Drive is accused of stealing money from Wooten Oil Co. Her bond was set at $2,000.
