Accidents
Damages were estimated at $19,300 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was charged with exceeding a safe speed after a rear-end collision at 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Edgerton Street near North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Johnnie Lee Porter, 55, of Claiborne Avenue, was not injured after his car collided with a parked sport utility vehicle. The SUV was registered to Joseph Clifton Artis of Piedmont Place. Damages were estimated at $4,500.
*Damages were estimated at $14,000 in a two-car crash at 7:36 a.m. Tuesday at O'Berry and Massey roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Katie Elizabeth Jones, 17, of Burton Road, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation. The report said she had pulled from Massey Road and the car that she was driving collided with a westbound auto driven by James Richard Dills, 56, of U.S. 117 South Alternate, Dudley.
*A driver suffered a diabetic shock and her car ran off Beston Road and a struck a sign near U.S. 70 at 2:25 p.m. Monday, the Highway Patrol said. Sandra A. Kemp, 52, of Myrtle Road was not injured, but she was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and released, a spokeswoman said. No charges were filed. Damages were estimated at $800.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A DVD player, six DVDs, a chest freezer, a watch, a weed trimmer, frozen foods and cigarettes were stolen Thursday from a home in the 1800 block of New Hope Road, deputies said. The thief damaged a lock to get inside. The resident, Michael Lee Gooding, estimated the value of the stolen property at $805 and damage at $30.
*A miter saw and a cordless drill were stolen Thursday after a door was pried open at a construction site on Mill Bluff Drive, deputies said. The owner, Don West of Pikeville, put an $880 value on the stolen tools.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Wednesday for a kitchen fire that caused about $2,700 in damages to an apartment at 913-B Lincoln Drive, a Goldsboro fire official said today.
The resident "was in another room, and grease on the stove caught on fire," Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said.
Damage was estimated at $1,700 to the Latoria Davis apartment and $1,000 to the contents, Whaley said. The contents were valued at $2,500. The apartment sustained smoke damage. The four-unit apartment building was valued at $200,000.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 12:50 p.m. call.
Parole studied
A man convicted of armed robbery in Wayne County in 1979 and sentenced to life in prison for the crime is being considered for parole.
Anyone with information either for or against Fletcher Royal's parole is asked to write to the state Post-Release and Supervision Commission at 4222 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-4222.
The commission determines whether a defendant convicted before Oct. 1, 1994, should be paroled. Parole has been eliminated by the current structured sentencing law for those convicted after that date.
Missing
A 14-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Wednesday by relatives to Goldsboro police. LaDreama Jasmine Wallace of 1202-B Olivia Lane was described as 5-feet-2 and 180 pounds with brown-blonde hair, green eyes and a fair complexion.
When she was seen last at 12:01 a.m., she was wearing a red shirt, black jeans and red shoes.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call police at 705-6572.
Bomb threats
Two bomb threats were called into Wayne Community College this week, forcing the evacuation of all buildings on campus until security measures could be taken.
Calls were received by school officials from a man on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, saying a bomb had been planted at the school.
Among those forced outside in the rain Thursday about 8 p.m. were actors in Moffatt Auditorium preparing for a theater performance based on the Spoon River Anthology.
Goldsboro police confirmed the bomb threats and said they are investigating the source of the calls.
