State to remove abandoned tanks at Seven Springs

SEVEN SPRINGS -- The state Department of Transportation plans to remove two abandoned underground storage tanks from the state's right-of-way on Main Street, and there may be more.
The state Department of Transportation's environmental inspectors found contaminated soil at the sites of two former service stations in December. They are on the east side of Main Street.
They also found metalic readings indicating that more underground tanks could be in the area. The town board was notified. In a letter to the board, highway officials said the state will clean up the contaminated soil and require a sealed drainage system be installed.
Seven Springs Town Commissioner Danny Carter told the board Wednesday night that the state will take money that had been allocated to the town to install curb and gutters on Main Street and spend it to remove the tanks. Since any drainage work would have to be concealed, he said, curb and gutters cannot be built in that area.
