Name change
FAISON -- The Dean's Specialty Foods pickle plant will join 10 other specialty food division plants of the Deans Foods Corporation in forming a new publicly-traded private label. No official name for the label has been mentioned.
A source close to the plant in Faison said no date is set, but it is expected to happen around July.
Amy Barker in the public information office of the Dean's Foods headquarters in Dallas, Texas could not be reached for comment before press time this morning.
Water service interruption
The city of Goldsboro will interrupt water service along six roads Friday morning as a work crew replaces a fire hydrant.
The outage could begin as early as 8 a.m. and last until noon. The affected areas are on Slocumb Street, from Newsome Street to Dixie Trail; Harris Street, between Poplar Street and Slocumb; Bunche Drive, from Slocumb to John Street; Peele Street, from Bunche Drive to Hamilton Drive; and Stadium Drive and Public Drive, both from Slocumb to Stadium Road.
In the event of rain Friday, the hydrant will be replaced Monday, Feb. 21.
Community Lenten service
The Rev. Rosalind Ziccardi of Pinewood Presbyterian Church will deliver a message from the first chapter of Colossians at the Community Lenten Service on Wednesday.
The liturgist will be Dr. Alton A. Smith, pastor of St. Mark Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ.
Lunch will be served by Pinewood Presbyterian for $3 per person.
The Lenten services are being held each Wednesday through March 23 at Best Grove Baptist Church, 1065 Tommy's Road. The services begin in the sanctuary at noon and lunch is served in the fellowship hall at 12:30.
Business at Breakfast
MOUNT OLIVE -- Laura Strickland and Coy Brock of Team Financial Resources will speak about college savings plans at the Mount Olive Area Chamber's Third Thursday Business at Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Hennessee Room of Mount Olive College. The event is free to chamber members and guests. Call 658-3113 by Wednesday to reserve a place at the breakfast or for information.
New at the festival
MOUNT OLIVE -- New things are planned for the N.C. Pickle Festival this year, which will be held April 23 and 24.
A fly-by will be held at the Mount Olive Municipal Airport on Saturday, April 23, as well as remote-controlled airplane demonstrations and sky divers, said Patti O'donoghue, president of the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, which holds the festival each year.
Also new this year will be the Pickle Recipe Contest. Mrs. O'Donoghue said the festival committee is still writing the guidelines, but there will be two requirements. The pickle products in the recipe must be Mt. Olive Pickle Co. products, and the winning recipe must become property of the chamber.
The committee is also working on an area especially for the older youths. This area will have a rock climbing wall and an "extreme slide."

ALBERTSON -- The 20th annual Washington's Day Fox Hunt will be held all day Saturday, beginning with a memorial service at 7 a.m. at the Albertson Ruitan Community Building on N.C. 111-903.
Breakfast begins at 5 a.m., and lunch is served from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with barbecued chicken and pork and Albertson's famous fish stew.
Willie Rouse, who has cooked stew for the lunch each year since 1963, said mounted hunters used to chase the fox with their hounds in the late 1940s and early 1950s, but then deer migrated into the area. The fox hunters didn't like their dogs going after the deer, because they traveled farther before getting tired.
The field trials started 20 years ago. He said there were 200 dogs last year. The hunt attracts between 600 and 800 spectators annually..
The event is sponsored by the Albertson Ruitan Club, and the club shares the proceeds with Albertson's volunteer fire department, the recreation center and the new North East Duplin Library.
