Assaults
reported
An elderly woman was robbed Thursday of her pocketbook and another woman was assaulted in her home, according to Goldsboro police reports.
The older woman had parked her car at about 12:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Langston Drive. She told police that a black man demanded her pocketbook and when she refused, he cut the strap, threatened to cut her and stole her property.
The pocketbook, valued at $20, contained $190 and personal papers, the report said.
The robber was described as having a slim build and wearing dark clothes. He fled in an older dark car.
The younger woman reported that a man knocked on the front door of her apartment in the 900 block of Lincoln Drive at about 1:25 p.m. and when she opened it, the suspect barged inside and assaulted her with a sharp object.
She was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was listed today in stable condition in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokesman said.
The suspect could not be described further.
Burglary arrest
A man who tried to enter a woman's home Thursday was detained by the resident's boyfriend and alert neighbors until Goldsboro police arrived, reports said.
The man had beaten on the woman's front door in the 900 block of North John Street, then smashed her bedroom window and started to climb inside, police investigators said. The boyfriend spoke to the intruder, who then backed out of the window. Neighbors heard the noise and held the man for police.
Lawrence Wall, 38, of West Oak Street was charged with felony first-degree burglary, assault on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad at U.S. 117 Alternate and Outlaw Road near Dudley and charged with three felony drug offenses.
Adam Joseph Barfield, 30, of Mobile Circle, Dudley, and Michael Paul Sasser, 28, of North Berkeley Boulevard were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, conspiracy with intent to possess the drug and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose to keep and sell the drug.
Barfield also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Sasser also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Bedroom fire
Window blinds, drapes and carpet were burned before dawn today in a bedroom fire at a rental home at 1102 Edgerton St. in Goldsboro. No one was injured.
Fire Lt. Wade Johnson said the cause of the fire could not be determined.
Damage was estimated at $500 to the house and $100 to contents, Johnson said. The one-floor, wood-frame house was valued at $45,000, and contents were valued at $15,000. The home was occupied by Connie Brunson.
Fifteen firefighters with three engines and a ladder truck answered the 2:13 a.m. call. The fire was out when they arrived.
Break-ins
A 19-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with multiple felony offenses in connection with a business break-in.
Brandon Scott Barrow of Third Street was charged with two counts each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods and one count each of forgery, uttering and obtaining property by false pretense.
Barrow was accused of breaking into Willie's Radiator Shop at 201 N. James St. on Jan. 17 and stealing checks, cash and a compact disc player, Investigator K.S. Harris said. Barrow tried to cash two checks but did not get any money, and then he sold the CD player to a Goldsboro pawn shop, according to Harris.
Barrow's secured bond was set at $161,000. He already was jailed on outstanding felony drug charges filed by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in lieu of a $150,500 secured bond.
More charges are pending, officers said.
Three hurt
in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $29,550 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,150 in a four-vehicle collision at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Central Heights Road near New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Terry William Smith, 46, of East Ash Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorists were identified as Christine Elizabeth Bandy, 29, of Huntsman Place; Tracey L. Price, 33, of Mimosa Park Drive, and Rhonda G. Stocks, 40, of East Raintree Lane.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,400 in a two vehicle crash at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 on Indian Springs Road near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Ashley Jo Barnett, 16, of Eagles Nest Road, Dudley, and her passenger, Gary Jernigan, 14, of Indian Springs Road, Dudley, and the other driver, Sabrina Danyelle Council, 17, of Ruskin Road, Dudley, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Barnett, who was leaving a parking lot, was charged with a yield violation.
*A fifth wheel broke off of a trailer at 4:13 p.m. Jan. 15 as it was being pulled around a corner at Arrington Bridge and Emmaus Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. The trailer separated from the tractor and overturned into the left ditch. No charges were filed against the Case Farms driver, Kenneth Edward Ball Jr., 40, of Kinston. Damage was put at $16,000.
Money stolen
Four $20 bills were stolen Thursday after a car window was broken in the 100 block of Candy Place near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The car owner, Latron Anthony Hooker of Dudley, set damage at $500.
