Fires damage
home, apartment
Fires damaged a home and an apartment Wednesday in Goldsboro, a fire official said. No one was injured.
A cigarette left on a bed may have caused a fire at a rental house at 1006 N. Center St., Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said.
The resident, Juanita Moody, was in another room, Whaley said, when she discovered the fire. Damage to the one-floor, wood-frame house was estimated at $13,000. Damage was about $2,500 to the contents that were valued at $3,000.
Unattended cooking was blamed for a fire at 2:35 p.m. at 2201 Royall Ave. The resident, James Deans, estimated damage at $6,000 to the apartment and $1,000 to contents.
Two charged
with burglary
SMITHFIELD -- Two Goldsboro men were apprehended by a Johnston County prison guard after they allegedly broke into his daughter's home.
Edward Duncan, 21, of Spruce Street and Jeremy Lanal Faison, 21, of North Leslie Street were captured after investigators said they shot at the guard's truck during a a brief chase.
The guard, Glen Adams, said he noticed a van in his daughter's driveway, next to his home. He saw two men come out of the front door and confronted them. One pointed a gun at him and the fled. Adams pursued and the van ran into a ditch. The suspects were found in another vehicle.
Duncan and Faison were charged with breaking and entering, larceny and assault with a deadly weapon. Each was placed in the Johnston County Jail in Smithfield.
Captured
A Goldsboro man, wanted on multiple felony drug offenses, was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office after he had fled from a home near Parkstown.
Brandon Scott Barrow of Third Street was wanted on outstanding arrest orders for trafficking in cocaine, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.
When deputies found him in a home in the 100 block of Covey Drive, he tried to flee. A search dog tracked the suspect to woods behind the home. Barrow also was charged with resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,500 secured bond.
Drug charges
Three people have been arrested by Wayne County authorities and charged with felony drug offenses.
*A traffic stop on Tuesday on U.S. 70 East resulted in the arrest of a Kinston man and the seizure of six grams of cocaine, two grams of marijuana and $3,376. Antoine Bowser, 32, was charged the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $10,000 bond.
*Goldsboro police arrested a woman Wednesday on New Hope Road and charged her with four drug offenses. Shirley Daughtry Coley, 44, of Lindsey Brooke Lane, Pikeville, was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, Xanax and drug paraphernalia. She was held under $10,000 bond.
*Alan Timothy Smith, 26, of Cuyler Best Road was arrested Tuesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with trafficking in cocaine. Cash and drugs valued at more than $7,000 were seized. Smith was already being held in the Wake County Jail in Raleigh on other drug charges.
Body found
The body of a 68-year-old Goldsboro man was found Wednesday in his home, according to a Goldsboro police report. The victim was identified as Donoval E. Wheeler of 243 Hardingwood Drive. Police attributed the death to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Robberies
An elderly woman was robbed of her purse as she returned home and another woman fended off robbers in her home, Goldsboro police reported.
A man reportedly followed an 83-year-old woman into her home on Gloucester Road, then shoved her to the floor, grabbed the purse and ran. The woman was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released. The purse, valued at $25, contained an unknown amount of money and personal papers.
In another incident, two men asked a woman for a drink of water at her Kornegay Street home. Then they pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The 50-year-old woman grabbed the men and wrestled them out of the door. The suspects, who were black, fled east on Mulberry Street.
Wanted
Jacobs
A 22-year-old man is wanted by Goldsboro police on charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, common-law robbery and communicating threats.
Byron Vermont Jacobs, whose last-known address was on East Elm Street, was described as black, 6-feet-2 and 165 pounds with long black hair in cornrows and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police Investigator G.N. Lynch at 580-4214 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, sports collectibles and cards, personal papers, a safety box and about $800 were stolen from a home in the 200 block of Cella Street. Willie Williams put a $2,895 value on the property.
*About $30 in coins was stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Jeffrey Drive. S.S. Davis, estimated damage at $150.
*About $20 was stolen Wednesday after a drink machine was damaged at 1904 N. William St., police said. Damage was set at $300.
Shooting arrest
A Mount Olive man was jailed under $25,000 bond after he was charged with shooting another man Wednesday morning. Nickolas McIntyre was arrested by Mount Olive police about an hour after Horace Eley was shot at the intersection of Church and Franklin streets. Eley was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
