Golden "A"s awarded by health department

Schlotzky's Deli again captured the top award for restaurant sanitation given by the Wayne County Health Department. The award is based on scores given during the year's health inspections.
The "Golden A" awards, presented annually to restaurants and foodstands that earn 95 percent or higher, were given out to nearly 170 recipients Tuesday night at the Wayne Center.
Top winners in the five categories were Schlotzsky's in the restaurant category and also the highest score of all, with 102 percent; Winn Dixie Fishermans Wharf on Wayne Memorial Drive in the food stand category, with 99.8 percent for the year; Meadow Lane Elementary School, the top school lunchroom, with 101.75 percent; Countryside Assisted Living in the institutional food service category, with 101 percent; and the Food Lion in Pikeville, maintaining a 100 percent average for the year.
This is the seventh year the county has sponsored the program. Health Director James Roosen applauded those who earned the status.
"If you have been able to receive 95 percent or higher for the year, it shows your commitment to excellence," he said, noting that there are 34 different categories that the Health Department looks for in the quarterly inspections, from food temperature to equipment to employee hygiene.
Ben King of the Environmental Health Department likened the "Golden A" to an all-star game.
"You have done the extra things and are deserving of being recognized for that," he said. "You have not only done a good job but you have been steadfast and have done an excellent job."
He encouraged those who had been "fence-sitters" for the past year to "hold fast to the course. I want to see you all back here next year."
Ronnie Syverson, infection control practitioner at Wayne Memorial Hospital, was the speaker for the evening. He talked about about noroviruses, which are commonly referred to as "stomach flu."
He cautioned food handlers on the importance of frequent hand-washing and the need to stay home when they are sick rather than risk spreading viruses.
