Pikeville seeks 500,000 dollar loan for sewage plant

PIKEVILLE „ The town board decided Thursday to apply for a $500,000 low-interest loan to help build the town's new sewage treatment plant.
The new plant will cost a total of $4.1 million. A $3 million grant was approved for Pikeville in 2001 by the N.C. Environmental Management Commission.
The low-interest loan will come from the state Division of Water Quality.
The overall project includes building a new sewage treatment plant, upgrading the old pipes, refurbishing the water tower and increasing the size of the town's waste spray field.
The project also would use treated wastewater for irrigation.
In addition, the town is asking the state for more time to operate the current sewer plant.
Town Administrator Lonnie Graves said the existing sewer plant doesn't meet state requirements and has been operating under a special order of consent.
Pikeville is asking the state to extend that consent order until March, 2007.
