Donors who give blood this month will receive a special package containing a lapel pin, a magnet and a window decoration. It's the American Red Cross' way of thanking donors during National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, said Don Best, blood services director for the Wayne County Chapter.
He said that in the 82-county area served by the Carolinas Blood Services Region, of which Wayne is a part, about 1,500 units of blood are needed in the hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients and to help save the lives of accident victims.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health to give blood.
January blood drives will be held at the following locations:
*Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at O'Berry Center.
*Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Saulston United Methodist Church.
*Jan. 20 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church.
*Jan. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mount Olive College.
