Concert tickets
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross is selling tickets to the performance of Milton Bullock, the Golden Platter, an original member of the Platters.
The performance will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Goldsboro High School auditorium.
Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the chapter house, 600 N. George St., or by calling the chapter at 735-7201. The chapter will deliver orders of 10 or more tickets.
Proceeds will go to the chapter for local use.
Road to be closed
Mount Olive Mayor Ruff Huggins told the town board Monday the Wayne County Transportation Advisory Committee has given its blessing to closing 1,050 feet of Kelly Springs Road next to the Mount Olive Airport.
The runway has been extended nearly 4,200 feet, and Kelly Springs Road is "just a footstep away." The Mount Olive Airport Committee wants to extend the runway to 5,000 feet to accommodate larger business jets.
It would have cost up to a half-million dollars to move it, said the mayor, and it costs nothing to close a road.
The airport is already getting inquiries from pilots, said Town Manager Ray McDonald. He said the airport already has a jet in one of its larger hangars. They can land there fine, he said, but the insurance companies won't let them take off fully loaded until the runway reaches 5,000 feet.
Rep. Bell to speak and sing
State Rep. Larry Bell is coming to Mount Olive Sunday.
Bell will speak at a Martin Luther King Jr. service at 4 p.m. at St. James Church, 514 Breazeale Avenue.
The Carver Alumni and Friends Association sponsors the Martin Luther King program each year.
Delores Kennedy of Carver Alumni invited the Mount Olive town board members to the service Monday night during their regular monthly meeting.
When Bell makes a presentation, it's a good one, said Mayor Ruff Huggins. He usually sings, and Ms. Kennedy said he will sing again Sunday.
