Hispanic Christmas celebration
A "Three Kings Day Festival" is planned for Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Old Waynesborough Village.
Willie Cartagena of the Hispanic Community Development Center, which sponsors the event, said the festival reflects the Hispanic tradition of celebrating Christmas.
"It is when the three kings bring kids the presents, like Santa Claus does," he said. "It's supposed to be on January 6, but since that falls on a Thursday, we'll have the celebration on Saturday."
The event is free and open to the public. Among the activities planned, Cartagena said, there will be music, a play about the birth of Jesus, and food samples from different Latin American countries. Native dancers have also been invited to perform.
MLK event
The Goldsboro Wayne County Branch of the NAACP will sponsor a celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life on Jan. 17.
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. with a candlelight vigil at Mount Calvary Church on Denmark Street in Goldsboro. The service will be held at 7 p.m.
Asian aid
The Salvation Army is offering assistance to U.S. residents who have relatives missing in areas affected by the Asian tsunami.
The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network, or SATERN, will try to relay messages into the disaster area. SATERN consists of a world-wide amateur radio network and the Salvation Army's Corps and community centers.
Use of SATERN must be done through the Internet. Anyone needing to send a message should go to www.satern.org and click on "health and welfare information request." A form must be filled out and submitted.
The Salvation Army will not be able to confirm if messages are received.
