Trapping beavers
Ray McDonald, the Mount Olive town manager, says the town has trapped seven or eight beavers lately. He said it's a continuous effort, and they have to keep on top of it.
The critters will back up the wastewater treatment plant if the population isn't kept down, he said.
"You can trap every one of them today and six months from now, the dams will be back," he said. "We're trying to keep the streams on both sides of town open so we don't have any flooding."

Pickle drops Friday
A pickle will descend at 7 p.m. Friday, which is Greenwhich Mean Time for the stroke of midnight on New Years's Eve, at the Mt. Olive Pickle Co.
This is the pickle company's sixth year of holding its New Year's Eve Pickle Drop. The event will be held at the corner of Cucumber and Vine streets in Mount Olive and will be open to the public. The festivities begin at 6 p.m.
Activities include a lighted three-foot pickle that will be dropped down the company's flagpole and into a redwood pickle tank. Mr. Crisp, the eight-foot-tall pickle, will also make an appearance. There will be live music by the Harmony Boys and free refreshments -- including pickles.
