Gateway reviews suggestions sites for bus shelters

The Goldsboro Wayne Transportation Authority received a list of proposed sites for bus shelters Monday, but still needs permission from some of the property owners.
Paul Larson suggested the following locations: Seymour Homes public housing, Kmart, Piggly Wiggly on Lionel Street, Courtyard Apartments, Westhaven public housing, Fairview public housing, Lincoln Homes public housing, Woodcrest public housing, Elmwood Terrace public housing, the Wayne County Department of Social Services, Eastpointe mental health agency, and Berkeley Mall.
Larson is a representative for Applebus, the company that manages the Gateway bus and van system.
Last month the authority voted to buy 11 shelters for $2,500 each from Brasco Inc. of Detroit, Mich.
A need for shelters at various bus stops has been a frequent request of riders for several years, but ordering them has not been easy due to governmental red tape.
The shelters will be closed on three sides but open in the front. A bench, stretching three quarters of the length of the shelter, will be mounted inside. The remaining space will be for wheelchairs.
David Eatman, contract administrator for Gateway, said the shelters should not take longer than a month to arrive.
City Manager Richard Slozak reminded the authority that city workers would be pouring the concrete slab for the shelters. "And if the weather is cold, there could be a delay in doing that," he said.
In other matters, the Gateway board approved a policy allowing service animals, such as guide dogs, to accompany people with disabilities in the vans and buses.
