FREMONT -- The Fremont town board has approved a new design for sidewalks in the first block of East Main Street at a $25,000 price increase.

Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie said during Tuesday night's monthly meeting of the Town Board of Aldermen meeting that state road grants would cover the cost.

Alderman Leon Mooring asked when the project would start. "This has been going on for too long," he said.

The new sidewalks, along with new street lights, were part of the Town Hall renovation project that included underground wiring. Town Hall was finished in January, about six months late.

Meanwhile, Public Works Director Tim Howell said the town has repaired every sewer line "that we know about." He also was asked about the new 16-inch line to Goldsboro. He said he could tell a little difference in the flow of sewage to Goldsboro.

Alderman W.T. Smith asked the board to consider putting sewer on N.C. 222 to the new U.S. 117 bypass so that new businesses could be built there.

"That's an excellent idea," McDuffie said.

In other business, the board:

*Amended its contract to pay Pierson and Whitman, the Raleigh engineering firm, $16,500 more for additional work in line replacements constructed by T.A. Loving Co. of Goldsboro.

*Agreed to form a partnership with Norwayne Middle School.
