Ex-patrol sergeant
charged with DWI
The retired first sergeant of the Highway Patrol's Wayne County District has been charged with driving while impaired.
John Douglas Booth, 58, of Trappers Run Drive was stopped at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday by Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Smith on Salem Church Road. Booth was taken to the Wayne County Jail, where he registered .17 percent blood-alcohol content. A BAC of. 08 percent or more is considered impaired under state law.
Booth was released from custody by signing a written promise to appear in District Court on Jan. 4 for a first appearance.
Booth served with the patrol for about 30 years, almost all of it in Wayne County. He ended his career by supervising the county's other troopers. After retiring, he ran in 1998 as the Democratic Party's candidate for sheriff but was defeated by the Republican incumbent, Carey Winders.
Onslow man held
in church break-in
An Onslow County man was charged Monday by Wayne County sheriff's detectives with breaking into and stealing property from a church near Mount Olive.
The arrest of Kevin Darnell Spain, 41, of Richlands also was believed to have cleared about 50 other church break-ins in Onslow, Duplin, Sampson and Lenoir counties, officers said.
Spain was accused of breaking into Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said. He was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. His secured bond was set at $50,000.
Spain was being held by Onslow County authorities after he was arrested in September during an attempted church break-in. During the arrest, however, he escaped and was recaptured in November in Georgia.
A co-defendant, Robert Ruffin, was arrested earlier.
The two men also had been accused of breaking into Corinth Baptist Church in Sampson County five times and stealing a television each time, according to reports.
Wayne County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster and the Onslow, Duplin and Sampson County sheriff's offices assisted in the investigation and arrest.
House fire
Thieves may have started a fire Monday night at a vacant house at 515 E. Walnut St., where a back door may have been forced open, officials say.
Fire Lt. Harold Isler said a piece of fabric was put on the stove and the burners were turned on. The fabric was burned, and the wall was damaged.
"When we unplugged the stove, it was still on and the burners were hot," he said.
Damage was limited to $400 to the wall and $600 to the stove.
"They were very fortunate," Isler said.
Isler said the owner, Yves Mallette, who was renovating the house, said he had been having problems with the back door.
The home was valued at $85,000 and contents were valued at $3,500.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 9:28 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. The needed 32 minutes to put out the fire, ventilate the home and finish salvage work.
Store break-in
An alert citizen's information late Monday night enabled Goldsboro police to arrest and charge a man for breaking into the Spur Gas station at 301 W. Grantham St.
Officers Thomas Bailey and M.A. Croom responded to an alarm at about 11 p.m. and found the front door glass had been smashed. A person in a passing car then told police that she had seen a black man who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and was running from the store. Police then stopped a man matching the description and found beer that had been taken from the store.
Donte Gevon Davis, 21, of Pecan Road, Dudley, was charged with two felonies, breaking and entering and larceny, and two misdemeanors, possession of stolen goods and carrying a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Tire rolls away
A tire broke free from an eastbound tractor-trailer, rolled across Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and struck the front end of a westbound tractor-trailer, causing about $5,000 in damages, a Goldsboro police report said.
The trucker whose tire came off -- Warren G. James, 69, of Rose Hill -- was charged with failure to secure a load. He was operating a rig for David Kostal Timber Co. of Wilmington. It was not damaged.
The wayward tire also rolled under the other rig and struck a tire on the tractor-trailer driven by Leo Artis Rhem Jr., 57, of Kinston.
Truck, mower taken
A pickup truck, a trailer and lawn tractor were stolen between Sunday and Monday from Professional Turf Services at 2682 U.S. 70 West, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The white 1999 Chevrolet crew cab was valued at $10,000, the 16-foot trailer with a wood bed was valued at $1,500 and the Toro lawn tractor with a 60-inch cut and a 27-horsepower motor was valued at $20,000.
A generator, a saw and other tools, with a combined value of $2,100, also were reported stolen.
The thief had cut a lock from a fence and disassembled the lock arm to get inside, deputies said.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, jewelry, $60 and other property were stolen Monday from a home in the 300 block of Mobile Circle near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, L.E. Jennette, put a $1,710 value on the missing property.
*A pickup truck was damaged Monday night in a drive-by shooting on Herman Lane Road, deputies said. No one was injured. But damage to the truck, driven by Derrick Wayne Crumpler and owned by Anthony Wayne Crumpler, was estimated at $3,000. The suspects were described only as white men.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $367 worth of property was stolen Monday after a door was forced open at an apartment in the 1800 block of North Carolina Street, police said. One resident, Megan Davis, reported the theft of a child's clothes, jewelry, a game system, a video tape, a DVD movie and other property, valued at a combined $177. Another resident, Tico Dixon, reported the theft of 30 DVDs and a video cassette recorder, valued at $190.
*A man said he was assaulted and robbed Monday of $17 in an apartment in the 1700 block of Maple Street, police said. Mohamed Layachi of Raleigh also said a phone and his car keys were taken but were recovered later. He described the suspects as white, about 20 years old, 6-feet to 6-2 and 130 to 140 pounds with thin builds.
Drug charges
Two men from Goldsboro have been arrested by Wayne County authorities and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Patrick Terrell Beamon, 24, of Stronach Avenue was arrested Monday by the Sheriff's Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team on Courtyard Circle in Goldsboro. He was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
*Samuel Constanza, 21, of Norwood Avenue was arrested Saturday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad at a Goldsboro hotel. He was charged with two counts of possession of cocaine, one count of maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
