New name

Berkeley and Goldsboro are common names here, and they're also names for "Commons."

The Commons being the shopping centers -- one of which is planned for Berkeley Boulevard across from Lowe's Home Improvement Store.

The sign to announce the coming shopping center that will reportedly have a T.J. Maxx and Circuit City names it "Goldsboro Commons." Meanwhile, paperwork at City Hall says the name is "Berkeley Commons."

So which is it?

City officials said that the project first came in with the name "Goldsboro Commons." But the city discovered that there was another small shopping center on U.S. 117 South with the same name, so the project is now "Berkeley Commons."

Fine amnesty

Wayne Community College's library is waiving fines for overdue materials returned this week.

The amnesty applies to both student and public patrons, no matter how overdue the item.

"It is in forgiving that we receive," said the college's head librarian, Silvia Judd. "We're hoping to see a lot of our old friends again, and the patrons who borrowed them, too."

The library is on the third floor of the Wayne Learning Center on campus. A bright blue book-return box is beside the drive in front of that same building.

To take advantage of the offer, patrons must return books between Dec. 13 and 17 before the library closes for the holiday break.

The library will be closed from 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, until 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6. For more information, call 735-5151.

Holiday break

Students will be dismissed early on Thursday for teachers to attend staff development workshops. Students won't return until Jan. 5.

Dismissal times Thursday will range from 12:15 to 1:35 p.m.

Questions regarding specific dismissal times for each school should be directed to the individual child's school.

Friday, Dec. 17, is a designated teacher workday. After that, teachers will be on holiday.
