County mulls requiring tax pay-off for deed transfers

The Wayne County commissioners have decided to give more thought to making a change in deed transfers.
The board has been considering asking the General Assembly for the authority to require that all property taxes be paid before a deed can be exchanged. Several counties, including Duplin, already have this requirement.
But County Attorney Borden Parker said Tuesday that local lawyers oppose this because they feel it will delay and complicate property transactions.
That would drive up legal fees, Commissioner Arnold Flowers said. "For every dollar the county would collect, we'd cost our businesses $5."
The discussion was tabled for more research.
Other business
Also Tuesday, the commissioners did the following:
*Agreed to seek a $700,000 Community Development Block Grant that would be used to improve homes along Cobb-Coley Lane off Durham Lake Road in southern Wayne.
*Went into closed session for more than 30 minutes to talk about industrial prospects. No action was taken afterward.
*Asked the N.C. Department of Transportation to take over maintenance of Bonnie Place and Brady Place, both of which are near the intersection of Ditchbank and Dollard Town roads.
*Established a public hearing for 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, for possible changes to the junk-car ordinance.
*Set a second hearing for 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, for Denize Odeh's request to rezone property at the northwest corner of Collier Street and U.S. 117, across from the Belfast Fire Department. The requested zoning, "village district," would allow construction of a convenience store.
