Secretary James G. Roche today submitted his resignation as Secretary of the U.S. Air Force.
Roche had advised Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in early October of his intention to complete his service at the end of the first Bush administration.
"Jim Roche has led the Air Force during an important period in history," Rumsfeld said. "Combined with his distinguished career with the United States Navy, Secretary Roche has served our country capably and with honor. I thank him for his service and wish him all the best."
Roche plans to depart Jan. 20, 2005, or sooner if his successor is confirmed by the Senate before then.
