It's 1st through 4th floors
Visitors should no longer be confused by the numbers of the floors at the Wayne County Courthouse Annex. It now will be as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.
The bottom floor will no longer be called the ground floor. Starting Wednesday, it will be the first floor. The next two floors will be the second and third, and the top floor will be the fourth.
County Manager Lee Smith announced the change Monday in a memorandum to county department managers and others. New signs should be in place Wednesday.
The county tax and Register of Deeds offices will now be on the first floor, not the ground floor. The Clerk of Courts Office and District Court rooms will be on the second floor. The Superior Court rooms and Planning Department will be on the third floor. The District Attorney's Office and Courtroom No.6 will be on the fourth floor.
Park programs
Have you ever wondered how a river becomes so dirty? If so, you can join a park ranger at the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park museum area at 2 p.m. Saturday for an interactive story.
Participants will be able to hear the story while participating in creating the cycle of how a river becomes polluted. Learn ways you can help clean the water and prevent it from becoming polluted.
On Sunday, a park ranger will conduct a hike and will point out identifying characteristics of different species of trees. Participants should meet at the museum area at 2 p.m. and should wear good walking shoes. They may want to bring water and insect repellent.

Demolition derby winners
Gary Davenport of Seven Springs was the feature winner of the state championship for full-size cars in the demolition derby Sunday at the North Carolina State Fair.
In the full-size car division, Donald Stokes of Goldsboro was the runner-up. Winners of the Mechanic's Awards over the weekend included Jeannie Davenport of Seven Springs and Dennis Crum of Kinston. Bobby Creel of Kinston was one of three winners of the Best Appearance Award.
Mall trick-or-treat
Berkeley Mall will have trick-or-treating Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for children 11 and younger. Flimsy the Clown will perform on stage from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
