Warsaw releases schedule for famous parade

WARSAW -- The schedule for the 84th consecutive Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 6, is as follows:
A pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge begins at 8 a.m., followed by the opening of the sidewalk vendors at 9 a.m.
At 10 a.m. is the memorial service in the Veterans' Park.
At 11 a.m. is a fly-over that will be the signal for the parade to begin. Marshals are Medal of Honor recipients Walter J. Marm Jr., Rodolfo Hernandez, Robert Patterson and Lt. Col. Gordon Roberts.
From 7 p.m. until midnight will be a dance and concert at the VFW Post 9810. It is at 364 Bruce Costin Road about one mile from the turn off on U.S. 117 North. Social hour will be from 7 until 8 p.m., with light refreshments and soft drinks. The live band will start the dance at 8 p.m. The cost will be $5 per person, and tickets will be sold only at the door. There will be no brown-bagging or smoking inside the building.
The event this year will be sponsored by WCTI Channel 12 and UPN 48 television, with live programming. The theme this year is "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty."
Oct. 27 is the deadline to submit parade applications, which are on hand in the office of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce in Town Hall. For information call Linda Kitchin at 910-293-7804 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. She also has information for people who want to set up a vendor's booth.
The "Veterans Day Writing Contest" is going on in all of the Duplin County schools. The theme is "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty." The first-prize winner gets $100, second place gets $50, and third place gets $25. The winners will ride on the Veterans Museum float, and their papers will be on display at the museum and become a permanent archive of the museum. The contest closes Friday.
