Second inmate in less than month dies

A 41-year-old Wayne County Jail inmate died Sunday night of what was believed to be natural causes, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said. This was the second man to die in the jail in less than a month.
The victim was identified as Terry O'Neil Teachey of 317 Brentwood Drive, Dudley. He had been jailed since Sept. 20 to await a trial on charges of breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and possession of cocaine. He was being held in lieu of a $22,000 secured bond.
Teachey's body was found at about 8:15 p.m. in his cell. Wayne County rescue personnel were summoned and pronounced him dead. The county medical examiner, Dr. H.B. Kornegay, also was contacted.
Sheriff Carey Winders notified the State Bureau of Investigation. Special agents assisted in the investigation.
Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said there were no signs of foul play or violence.
"According to information obtained, the cause of death was probably from an existing condition that Mr. Teachey had for some time," Raecher said.
The body will be sent to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Teachey also had been sentenced Oct. 4 in Wayne County Superior Court to six to eight months in prison for a probation violation.
Teachey was the second inmate to die in the jail in less than a month.
Roy Lee Allen, 60, of Parkstown died Sept. 16 of natural causes.
Like Teachey, Allen said, he had no medical problems when he was jailed less than two days earlier.
Allen had been charged by Goldsboro police with taking indecent liberties with a 2-year-old child.
