United Way hits 33 percent
United Way's 2004 campaign has reached 33 percent of its goal.
Donnie Barnes, campaign chairman, reports that $429,200 has been raised. The amount will improve 8,584 lives in Wayne County, say United Way officials.
This year's goal is $1,332,000.
Businesses concluding their employee campaigns are as follows:
*WAGES, $18,607, a 28 percent increase, to improve 372 lives;
*City of Goldsboro, $32,858, 100 percent participation from the police department, a 25 percent increase, to improve 657 lives;
*Excell Linde, $15,526, to improve 310 lives;
*Proffitt's, $801, a 33 percent increase, to improve 16 lives;
*Wachovia Bank, $6,375, to improve 127 lives;
*Wachovia Securities, $2,600, to improve 52 lives;
*Wayne Realty and Insurance, $3,745, to improve 75 lives.
A mid-campaign report meeting will be held Oct. 20 at 8 a.m. at B&G Grill.
Base wins award
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has won the Senior Master Sgt. Gerald J. Stryzak Award.
The award designates the flight as the best in Air Combat Command for the second year in a row.
Over 40 percent of the flight supported Operation Iraqi Freedom by securing over 16,000 pieces of ordnance and protecting 10 flying squadrons. The flight also clears and recycles bombs at the Dare County Bomb Range, N.C.; in Avon Park, Fla.; and in Saylor Creek, Idaho.
