Hugo Gonzalez

Navy Seaman Apprentice Hugo A. Gonzalez, nephew of Gaspar Gonzalez of Goldsboro, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Gonzalez completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Justin Hughley

Marine Corps Pfc. Justin S. Hughley, son of Judith R. Hughley of Dudley, recently graduated from the Basic Hygiene Equipment Operator Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

During the course, Hughley received instruction in basic plumbing, maintenance management, military water supply, water purification and hygiene equipment, and field sanitation.

He joined the Marine Corps in 2003.

Kenya Darden

Navy Seaman Recruit Kenya D. Darden recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

The eight-week program included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was placed on physical fitness.

The daughter of Brenda F. and Tom Daniels of Goldsboro, she is a 2004 graduate of Goldsboro High School.

Prince Shipman

Army Pvt. Prince Shipman has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to engage in military operations involving U.S. and coalition forces.

Operation objectives include liberating the Iraqi people, preserving Iraq as a unified state, keeping its territorial integrity intact, and helping the Iraqi people begin the process of economic and political reconstruction. Active duty, reserve, and national guard members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces are participating in the operation.

The private is a light-wheel vehicle mechanic.

He is the son of Michael D. and Dottie R. Shipman of S. Breazeale Ave., Mount Olive, and is a 2002 graduate of North Duplin High School, Calypso, N.C.

Michael Rouse

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Michael Rouse has participated in a deployment to Kosovo in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, as a member of Task Force Falcon. The soldier supported the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and helped construct and secure Camp Bondsteel.

Sgt. Rouse, a supply sergeant, is assigned to the 514th Military Police Company, Winterville. He is a 1980 graduate of North Lenoir High School, LaGrange, N.C.

Lyndsey Wisniewski

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Lyndsey R. Wisniewski has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

She is the daughter of Patricia Griffin of Oro Grande, Calif., and Lt. Col. Clay Wisniewski of Goldsboro.

Fred Hines

Army National Guard Sgt. Fred Hines has participated in a deployment to Kosovo in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, as a member of Task Force Falcon.

The soldier supported the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and helped construct and secure Camp Bondsteel.

Sgt. Hines, a wheeled vehicle mechanic, is assigned to the 514th Military Police Company, Winterville. He is a 1982 graduate of North Lenoir High School, LaGrange.

Charles Best

Army National Guard Spec. Charles L. Best has participated in deployment to Kosovo in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, as a member of Task Force Falcon.

The soldier supported the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and helped construct and secure Camp Bondsteel. Best, a military police, is assigned to the 514th Military Police Company, Winterville.

The specialist graduated in the year 2000 from East Duplin High School, Beulaville, N.C.

Robert Houston

Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Robert E. Houston has participated in a deployment to Kosovo in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, as a member of Task Force Falcon. The soldier supported the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and helped construct and secure Camp Bondsteel.

Houston, a squad leader, is assigned to the 514th Military Police Company, Greenville, N.C.

The sergeant is a 1972 graduate of James Kenan High School, Warsaw.

Linwood Price

Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Linwood R. Price has participated in a deployment to Kosovo in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, as a member of Task Force Falcon.

The soldier supported the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and helped construct and secure Camp Bondsteel.

Sgt. Price, a platoon sergeant, is assigned to the 514th Military Police Company, Winterville. He is a 1967 graduate of Southern Wayne High School inDudley, N.C.

Charily McPhail

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Charily McPhail, daughter of Jacquelene and John Graham of Goldsboro, recently participated in a commissioning ceremony for the U.S. Navy's newest destroyer, USS Chung-Hoom (DDG-93) homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The Chung-Hoon is the latest Arleigh Burke-class Aegis equipped guided missile destroyer and named after Rear Admiral Gordon P Chung-Hoon, who served in the Navy from 1934 to 1959. He was a young lieutenant at the start of World War II and was attached to USS Arizona (BB 39) when it was attacked and sunk at Pearl Harbor.

He is a 1996 graduate of Goldsboro High School of Goldsboro and joined the Navy in October, 1997.

Mario Smith

Navy Seaman Apprentice Mario Q. Smith, son of Carolyn M. and Bernard Thomas of Goldsboro and a 2004 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Smith completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Jacob Wharton

Jacob A. Wharton has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

The training provides training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support. Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader. The cadet command assesses each cadet's performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course.

Wharton is the son of Suzi L. and Jeff L. Wharton of Walnut Creek and is attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Ariz.
