Schools schedule free parent seminar

Wayne County public schools want to equip parents to help their children succeed in school.
On Friday, Oct. 22, a free seminar will be offered from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the H.V. Brown Cultural Center on Poplar Street. The eighth annual workshop will focus on teaching parenting skills and building relationships between home and school to help children excel academically.
Teachers, principals and administrators from the school system will offer strategies on helping children learn to read and write.
Dr. Willette Wooten, director of federal programs for the school system, said that studies have shown that children who master basic reading skills by third grade will have fewer problems as they proceed through school. Reading frequently is one of the crucial components of becoming a good reader, she said.
In addition to tactics for mastering reading and writing, parents will learn about the revised math curriculum for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Johnny Allen, a professional parent educator with Parent Partners in Davidson, N.C., will also be a presenter.
The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Arthur Evans of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
There will also be a discussion about the intricacies of the state and federal academic regulations.
