Dog finds driver

A Fremont man was charged with driving while impaired and other crimes Wednesday after he wrecked his truck and ran off into the woods.

Michael Kirby Powell, 30, of Memorial Church Road, Fremont, was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, hit and run, and fugitive warrant. His bond was $1,500.

Goldsboro police said he crashed his 1969 Ford pickup truck on Fedelon Trail between William and Granville streets. A witness said she heard a loud crash and approached the truck. She saw the driver inside, his head bloody. She said he began to climb out of the truck, and she told him to stay there.

He ran toward the woods. An officer with a dog found him about 100 yards from the road, lying down on the ground because of the head injury.

He was treated at the Wayne Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, submitted to a blood test and was released. Damage to his 1969 Ford pickup truck was $4,000. Damage to two driveway columns was $1,500.
