Fire deemed suspicious
A home at 504 S. Audubon Ave. was damaged Monday night in a fire called suspicious by a Goldsboro fire official.
A neighbor saw the fire and called 911. When firefighters arrived within four minutes, Assistant Chief Ray Boyette said, heavy smoke was showing. Flames were visible later from a side window. No one was injured.
Boyette referred the investigation to police.
Sixteen firefighters responded to the 8:34 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed more than two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the one-floor brick home and $3,000 to the contents. The home, owned by Dorothy Newsome, was valued at $55,000. Contents were valued at $7,000, Boyette said.
Vehicle break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's officers believe that they have solved a series of vehicle break-ins in southern Wayne with Monday's arrest of a teen-ager.
Lacosta Shabazz Lewis, 19, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, was accused of breaking into at least five vehicles Sept. 3 near Kelly Springs and Emmaus Church roads, Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said today.
When Patrol Sgt. Steve Mozingo and B-shift deputies arrested Lewis, the suspect had some stolen property on him, the officers said. Other property was found in Lewis' car, Detective Tom Flores said.
Lewis was charged with breaking and entering of vehicles, possession of stolen goods and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also was charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen goods and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $57,500 secured bond.
Burglary charge
When a couple returned home Monday night, they saw a strange car in their yard and a light go out in their home on Water Oak Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
A man then walked out the front door, dropped part of a stereo and told the residents that he was sorry but that he needed the money, the report said. He then drove away.
With information from the resident, John Wayne Sasser, sheriff's deputies later located a suspect. Jason Robert Groff, 23, of West Washington Street, LaGrange, was charged by Detective Tom Flores with felony second-degree burglary, felony possession of burglary tools and injury to property. Groff was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Sasser reported the theft of a video-game system, 35 video games, a watch, food, medicine and $200. The stolen property was valued at $2,650. The thief also had inflicted an estimated $1,050 in damages to sliding glass doors, hallway walls, a bedroom and two locks to get inside, the report said.
Eleven hurt in wrecks
Eleven people were injured and damages were estimated at $38,000 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A bicyclist ran a red light at 11:45 a.m. Monday at Ash and North James streets and injured when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle, Goldsboro police said. Gilbert Lee, 38, of West Vine Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. The SUV, driven by Carolyn J. Kinsey, 47, of Parkwood Drive, sustained about $200 in damages. No charges were filed.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Ninth Street, police said. Eleuteria Lopez Cabrera, 34, of Peartree Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a stoplight violation and no operator's license. The other driver was Michael Darrell McCrae, 42, of Robin Place.
*A driver lost control of his sport utility vehicle at 2:30 p.m. Monday on Westbrook Road near South Slocumb Street, police said. The SUV ran off the right side, then careened out of control off the left side and overturned, the report said. Andre Morrison, 22, of Twin Creek Drive was charged with failure to maintain lane control. Damage was put at $9,000.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 at 7:46 p.m. Sunday at N.C. 111 and Dollard Town Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jamie Marie Wiley, 33, of Powell Road, and her passengers, Danzelya Wiley, 12, of Powell Road and Brianna Benedict, 12, of Hunter's Creek Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Wiley and the other motorist who was making a left turn, Alberto Ponce Castaneda, 16, of Conover Road, LaGrange, said they had the right of way. No charges were filed.
*A driver was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 9:20 p.m. Saturday at a bridge over Brooks Swamp Creek on O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jaeson Antone Hackett, 19, of Old Grantham Road was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with a safe-movement violation after he said he was blinded by an oncoming car's headlights and his car ran off the right side, struck the bridge and stopped in the creek. The car was valued at $7,000.
*Two people were injured and their car was demolished in a wreck at 1:51 p.m. Saturday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Gary Wayne Daniels, 47, and his passenger, Christian Daniels, 3, both of Cedar Creek Lane, Snow Hill, were released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after the car ran off the right side, went down a bank and struck small trees. The car was valued at $3,000.
*Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,800 at 7 p.m. Saturday at Emmaus Church and Sleepy Creek roads, the Highway Patrol said. Markisha Shonta Kelly, 18, of Barwick Road, LaGrange, and a passenger, Dalton Randolph, 24, of Wayne Avenue, were listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Two other passengers, Shanicka Kelly, 14, of Barwick Road, Michael Kelly, 18, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, and were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Bartley Kyle Warren, 22, of William R. King Road, Newton Grove, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
Jewelry stolen
About $7,000 in jewelry and $2,000 in entertainment equipment were stolen Monday from a home in the 1200 block of Franklin Street, a Goldsboro police report said.
The thief had opened window to get inside, the report said. The resident, Stacy Oliver, also reported the theft of a video camera, a camera, a DVD player, 30 DVDs and video-game equipment.
Police also are investigating the theft of 17 jackets and other property from the Paradise Flea Market at 1016 N. William St. The thief had inflicted about $75 in damages to a door to get inside between Sunday and Monday, the report said.
One vendor, Andre Clatone of Dudley, reported the theft of seven leather jackets, four Jeff Gordon jackets and six other jackets, valued at $3,900. Another, Susan Dunham of Goldsboro, told police that a CD player and three lights, valued at $50, also were taken.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A couch, a washer, a dryer and food were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Brenn Loop Drive. The thief had damaged a door to get inside and then damaged a dining room table. The resident, Nakiea F. Garner, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,150 and set damage at $375.
*A 55-inch television, a TV-VCR combination, another TV, three pit bull puppies, a stereo system and a video-game system were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Dell Drive. The resident, Larry Donnell Hagans, put a $3,625 value on the three televisions and said the puppies were worth $300. Some of the stolen property had been rented, the report said.
*A red trailer with work reports was stolen from the 700 block of Overman Road. The trailer was valued at $1,500, according to the owner, D.W. Lanier.
Theft from barn
A 26-year-old man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with breaking into a storage barn on Wiseman Lane.
Tobey Steven Blankenship of Wiseman Lane, Kenly, was accused of stealing property, owned by Gene Wiseman. The property was recovered, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said. Blankenship was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond on the felony charges.
Fraud
A Goldsboro teen-ager has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and accused of using another person's debit card to obtain money from automated teller machines.
Brandon Scott Barrow, 19, of Third Street was arrested at the Wayne County Regional Fair after an investigation by Detective Chris M. Bezio. Barrow was charged with financial identity fraud. Barrow also was charged with breaking and entering of a vehicle and larceny. His bonds totaled $11,000.
Missing
Two people have been reported missing to Wayne County authorities.
*Sacelia Monique Williams, 15, of 2075 Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 110 pounds with black hair in braids and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, she was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and white shoes.
*Shajuna D. Applewhite, 20, of 1025 Royall Ave. was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 115 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. She was seen last at 4 p.m. Friday. No clothing description was available.
