Voter registration
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 2 general election is 5 p.m. Friday.
People who are already registered do not need to re-register, but if they have moved since the last election, they should notify the Board of Elections of the change by the deadline.
To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old and have been a county resident at least 30 days by Nov. 2.
You can register at the elections office, 209 S. William St., any weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Forms are also available at Department of Motor Vehicle offices and at county libraries.
Wayne Community College will hold a voter registration drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the atrium of the college's main building. The drive is open to the public.

Students out
Students in Wayne County public schools will be dismissed early this Tuesday and on Oct. 19, in order for teachers to attend staff development workshops.
Dismissal times will range from 12:15 to 1:35 p.m. Questions regarding specific dismissal times for each school should be directed to the individual child's school.
There is also no school for students Friday, which is designated a teacher workday.
Animals of the Cliffs
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park will offer a program that teaches about the different animals that live at the park.
Interested participants should meet the park ranger at the park museum area at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Reservations can be made by calling the park office at 778-6234 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Base squadron wins award
The 4th Civil Engineer Squadron's Energy Management Team at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base won the Federal Energy and Water Management Award. It will be presented during a ceremony on Oct. 28 in Arlington, Va.
The team executed a plan to reduce energy use at the base medical clinic, while improving comfort, performance, security and safety. The three-man team is Gary Emery, Kerry D'Hemecourt and Chris Wheeler. They converted an outdated heating and air conditioning control system at the clinic into an automated system and included an "anthrax shutdown" plan to protect patients and staff.
Chamber directors
The Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce has named its newly elected directors.
They are Stephanie Kornegay of Sleep Inn, Greg Eloshway of Southern Bank & Trust, Sandy Facello of IMPulse, Town Commissioner Paul Smalley and Ernie Taylor of Taylor Trucking.
Directors serve for three years, with terms beginning November 1.
The new directors will be introduced at the chamber's annual membership banquet scheduled for Nov. 3 at the Southern Wayne Country Club.
Stagestruck auditions
Auditions for the Missoula Children's Theatre performance of "Beauty Lou and the Country Beast" will be held Monday, Oct. 11, at 4:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
Rehearsals will take place after school Monday through Thursday, Oct. 11 through 14. On Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., the young people will perform the play.
Missoula's visit is being sponsored by Stagestruck. Auditions are open to Wayne County students in grades kindergarten through 12th.
There are 50 to 60 parts available. There is no cost to participate.
