Kaitlin Suzanne Thomas, 17, of Pikeville has received the Walter and Marie Williams Leadership Scholarship for her outstanding academic and extracurricular high school record.
The daughter of Mark and Janet Thomas of Pikeville, Kaitlin is majoring in nursing during her freshman year at East Carolina University. In addition to receiving a $1,000 scholarship, Kaitlin, a 2004 graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School, will participate in a year-long leadership program offered through ECU's Walter and Marie Williams Leadership Awards program.
"I believe this scholarship will help me tremendously with my transition to college," Kaitlin said. "I will not only meet great, new people and participate in fun activities -- like a rafting trip -- but this scholarship program will motivate me and encourage me to set goals and become a better leader."
The scholarship is awarded annually to 20 eastern North Carolina seniors who intend to enroll at ECU. In addition to demonstrating leadership qualities while in high school, the recipient must also have a 3.0 GPA and participate in a year-long leadership experience that focuses on ethics, decision-making strategies and community service.
Lynda Newsome of LaGrange, a student at Wayne Community College, has been received the North Carolina Nurse Scholars award toward her studies there.
The wife of Jack Newsome and daughter of Pat and Douglas Norns, her award is valued at $6,000 over two academic years.
Nurse scholar recipients are selected by the N.C. Nurse Scholars Commission based on outstanding academic achievement, school and community involvement, and leadership potential.
