Seven Springs FD to hold annual barbecue

SEVEN SPRINGS -- The Seven Springs Fire Department will hold its annual barbecue sale and harvest auction beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at the fire station.
Dinners cost $6 a plate with a choice between pork and chicken. The plates are available for eat-in or takeout.
The auction will begin at 7 p.m. at the same place. Doug Casey, one of the firefighters, auctions off the donated items along with auctioneer Joseph Parker.
The firefighters normally cook about 800 pounds of dressed pork and eight crates of chicken for each sale.
A half-chicken goes on each chicken plate. About 1,500 plates go out of the fire station bay each October.
The firefighters cook the meat themselves at a cook shelter next to the river and across the street from the fire station. The Ladies' Auxiliary mixes up the potato salad and coleslaw in the fire station. The ingredients are usually donated each year, and they start around 8:30 a.m. It takes about an hour to put it into the large pans.
Fire Chief Rick Sutton says the barbecue plates and the auction normally gross about $10,000, and the volunteer fire department usually makes about $9,000 after expenses.
